Emotions ran high at last night's Board of Education meeting as members voted repeatedly, ending up at a 3-3 vote impasse every time. Karessa Wheeler reports.

Following Monday’s departure of Trustee Yasmina Bouraoui, eight East Lansing residents have submitted applications to complete the last year of her term on the East Lansing Board of Education.

Citing a job opportunity she "could not turn down," Marble Elementary School Principal Sarah Scott has resigned as of November 7th. Karessa Wheeler reports.

Monday night's ELPS Board meeting covered a lot of ground, including updates to the Sex Ed curriculum, changes to make buses less crowded, and a District policy on dealing with ICE. Karessa Wheeler reports.

Residents and parents will have another chance on Nov. 9 to give East Lansing Public Schools their feedback on renovations at the now-closed Red Cedar Elementary School. 

East Lansing School Board member Yasmina Bouraoui has announced that she will retire from the Board later this month; the Board is accepting letters of interest as a first step in filling the empty seat. Karessa Wheeler reports.

At the first public forum on elementary renovations, existing plans were presented and citizens spoke up about concerns including bike-friendliness, road and sidewalk fixes and sustainable lunch trays. Karessa Wheeler reports.

“We are asking to reduce the size of Pinecrest by moving programming to Red Cedar immediately, increasing our interventionist to full time immediately and adding a restorative justice person immediately,” Alwin said. “Our whole school is failing and we need attention.”

East Lansing Public Schools has scheduled the first Community Forum on its bond construction projects. The forum will focus on planned renovations for Red Cedar Elementary School.

EL School Board members approved the hiring of a new High School principal and the retention of a controversial high school curriculum, but decided to wait on approving a permanent contract for Acting Superintendent Dori Leyko.
