At last night's regular meeting, the East Lansing Board of Education approved curriculum recommendations from its Sex Ed Advisory Board, including a decision not to adopt an optional unit on condom use for sixth grade students.
Four parents have told the East Lansing School Board that it should "halt and review" a program called Intercultural Dialogue, an eight-week workshop between students at East Lansing High School and MSU's Residential College of Arts & Letters.
On Wednesday, a black student at East Lansing High School was told by a teacher to remove her headwrap because "it wasn’t necessary for cultural or religious purposes" according to her parents. Karessa Wheeler reports.
The School Board voted unanimously last night to protect students regardless of their immigration status, including by protecting them from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials to the extent legally possible.
Eric Schertzing, Chair of the East Lansing Schools Community Bond Committee, and his wife, Nancy, are coordinating an effort called “East Lansing School Bond Yes Committee 2017" to advocate for passage of a $93.7 million dollar bond proposal.
“I know this is a non-traditional thing for a school board to do but these are unusual times. It is a time when school board trustees need to speak out. I feel particularly strong about this,” said [Karen] Hoene.
